Kevis Drummond Obituary

Kevis Cordez Drummond (42) was born in Clarksdale, Mississippi, on August 15, 1980, to parents Olivia Drummond and Larry Johnson. In his early years, the Drummond Family migrated to the lovely City of Chicago, Illinois, and settled on the far south side. In his early years, Kevis attended John Whistler Elementary School, where he was a standout basketball player. Next, he attended Fenger Christian Academy High School, where he learned the importance of leadership, perseverance, service, and education.

Kevis was the proud and protective older brother to Ontez L. Drummond (39), Orlando A.Drummond, Sr. (38), and bonus brother and first-cousin Jonathan M. Taylor (35). Never one to miss an opportunity to impart knowledge and ensure the Drummond Boys were fresh, and he often told his younger brothers, “Aye man, y’all need to make sure you’re on point in everything you do. Also, take off that weak shirt Ontez, and put on another one. It’s going to make the colors in your shoes hit better!” He did not play about personal upkeep and appearance. It’s hard to find a man as fresh as Kev. The man always looked good and could put together some clothes!!

Early in life, Kevis met his lifetime friend, Ronju “Ron” Lynch. If and when you saw Kevis, it was with his best friend. Not only was Ron a friend, but he also acted as a spiritual supporter and accountability partner. They were childhood friends that did everything and went everywhere together. Ron was instrumental in introducing Kevis to his wife.

While attending high school, Kevis met Taypeaka Carter during summer school. Kevis married Taypeaka on January 6, 2006, and they were married for 16 years. From this union, they had four beautiful children; Kevi “Bana” Drummond (23), Kevis “Man-Man” Drummond (22), Keiolani “Kii-Kii” Drummond (15), and Kamani “Maini” Drummond (12). Kevis was a proud and loving father who worked hard to provide for his young family. As a young man, he accepted Christ and was baptized. Later in life, at 26, he recommitted his life to the Lord and was baptized again at Power & Light Church in South Holland, Illinois. He was adamant about supporting and caring for his family. He would tell his younger brothers, family, and friends, “Grandma and mom raised us right. We will care for and raise our kids; you better always work and figure something out!” He loved his children dearly and never missed an opportunity to share how pleased he was with them and their accomplishments. Post-marriage, Kevis remained steadfast in his approach to supporting his children and previous spouse and being an encouraging force in their lives.

Although he had a shortened life, Kevis will always be an indelible figure amongst all that encountered him. He experienced quite a bit during his life; having lived throughout the Chicagoland area, he also lived and worked in Iowa and Nevada in multiple industries. During his management career at Sears, people often asked him why he was always smiling and happy, and he would respond simply with a smile. He was funny, loving, kind, and an astute negotiator regarding “deals.” If you knew Kevis, you knew he had a “deal” for you. Often presenting the deal by saying, “I gotta deal for you, G!” Somehow, it never felt like a deal while he was trying to sell you on his idea – LOL. Kevis had a hustle about him that was unmatched by others. He was a gym shoe fanatic and always had the best shoes and often sold them for large sums of money. He rarely missed an opportunity to make money.

He loved to strength train and cared for his body. During his body-building career, he traveled the country competing and trying to ascertain the International Federation of Body Builders Pro Card. In only his second competition, he won 2nd place in St. Louis, MO. He took 4th place in the natural body-building competition in Joliet, IL. He was incredibly strong, both physically and mentally. An amazingly driven person who never complained about hardships and challenges. Instead of complaining, he would find the silver lining in those situations and tell himself, “Come on, Big Kev, let’s get to work!” He would always circumvent life’s obstructions and be willing to pivot to find success. He would say, “There isn’t one way to success. There are a 100 ways, and I’ll try all of them to reach my goals and take care of us.”

Kevis was the epitome of someone with a good and precious heart. His soft-spoken tone always calmed a situation and made anyone feel safe. He was joyous and impervious to failure; he believed he could fix anything, help anyone, and always find a way to help himself.

His family care team ensured that his remaining time on this earth was filled with love and was peaceful, fun, and engaging. (Olivia & Arey Drummond, Kenyatta Taylor, Larry Johnson, Viola Harper, Markita Harper-Choice, Adana Robinson, LeRon Perkins, Jr., and Orlando, Sr.)

He loved life, fun at family events, doing things with his kids, watching food videos, his gym shoe collection, a good glass of wine, and visiting the barbershop to debate anyone about the greatness of Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant. We will undoubtedly miss him; however, he will never be forgotten. We love you, Kev!
